Interstellar is closing down

We are sad to have to inform you that Interstellar, Friends of the Syd Barrett Fund, is closing down owing to a lack of support and because another company, known as Squeaky Gate, has usurped Escape Artists (creators and original benificaries of the Friends of the Syd Barrett Fund) role within the charity sector. The story behind the usurpation of Escape Artists by Squeaky Gate will be explained later.

Oranges and Apples by The Trashcan Sinatras

17th August 2011. We would like to say a big thank you to The Trashcan Sinatras for their recent donation to the Syd Barrett Fund in support of Escape Artists. If you haven't yet heard Oranges and Apples (see above), check it out. It's a great song about our favourite artist.

Escape Artists at JustGiving

In Loving Memory of Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett (6 January 1946 – 7 July 2006)

“Syd would be so surprised and pleased to know all this was happening. He was never more content than when sketching or painting, be it cartoons, abstracts or still life. Syd felt above all he was an artist and loved experimenting with different mediums, sometimes just to see what might happen!” Rosemary Breen (Syd’s sister)

Back in October 2008, as part of The City Wakes festival celebrating Syd Barrett, five people who knew Syd in Cambridge in the sixties staged a happening as they had done forty years before, radical Beat poetry, free improvisation, words, sounds and people all in the moving womb of a Floydian light show by Pete Wynne Willson.

This was so much fun, and people seemed enjoy the experience so much, that they did it again, albeit completely differently (of course - that being the nature of a happening) in Bath, in May 2009. With that being so well received, they are returning to Bath for the 2011 event, which is bound to be as popular as the 2008 and 2009 stagings.

Again, Pete Wynne Willson did the light show for All at Once Again: Life, but Improvised. Other people were there include experimental filmmaker Anthony Stern,  Tom Bailey (once of The Thompson Twins), James Mickelson of the UFO Club, legendary beat poet Michael Horovitz, Nigel Lesmoir-Gordon on film, poems and words of mouth, William Pryor, and others.

Here's a glimpse at what happened on October 28th, 2008:

Barrett, a new limited edition, high quality, large-format book of Syd related material

Barrett is a premium quality, large format book, produced using the finest materials. It is full of unseen and rare images of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd. It collects and catalogues for the first time artworks and photographs by Syd himself.

The book is available to order now and will be published on March 18, 2011.

The book has been made in conjunction with the Barrett family and access to the family art and photograph archive, and their recollections have combined to show a new picture of Syd the creative, revealing a man who was a dedicated, practising artist throughout his life.

The book splits into three sections:

  • Syd’s life in photographs – from growing up through to working and performing with Pink Floyd and his life as a solo artist.
  • Unseen and unpublished illustrated letters sent to Libby Gausden-Chisman and Jenny Spires between 1962-1965, as Syd was finding himself as a painter and a musician.
  • All of Syd’s existing work as a visual artist from 1962 until his death.

The book contains over 250 images. These include:

  • Over 100 completely unseen images and many more reproduced in fine art quality for the first time.
  • Over 40 artworks including: paintings, drawings, mosaics, collages, and sculptures.
  • Over 50 unseen photographs taken by Syd of his artworks, including: images of his “destroyed” works seen here for the first time, studies in preparation for his artworks, images of his work area.

The Art section also includes:

  • An extensive commentary on Syd’s artworks by Barrett art expert Will Shutes.
  • Notes on Syd’s diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks, and his History of Art project.
  • The Catalogue Raisonné of Syd’s art – listing and dating all the artwork known to have existed.

The book publishes on March 18, 2011 in two editions and will be launched alongside a month-long exhibition at the prestigious Idea Generation Gallery in London.

Both editions of the book are now available for purchase prior to publication.

Escape Artists and the Insect Circus Take Over The Cambridge Botanic Gardens

A five-foot wasp was spotted playing the cymbals in-between the trees of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden earlier this month. But visitors had no cause for alarm - the giant bugs with their musical instruments were The Grasshopper’s Green Herbarian Band.

Students from the Red Balloon Learner Centre in Cambridge, which specialises in the education of severely bullied children, spent a day at the Garden disguised as giant insects. Professional performers worked together with ten students,…

Mick Rock Exhibition at London's Idea Generation Gallery

An exhibition of Syd Barrett Fund patron Mick Rock’s photography is coming to the Idea Generation Gallery in East London this November.

Celebrated as ‘The Man Who Shot the 70s’, Mick Rock’s images define rock n’ roll. Rock launched his career in 1972 with his portrait of an unknown David Bowie and has spent the last four decades capturing the most fascinating and exciting characters in rock music.

Coinciding with the publication of Mick's new book, Exposed: Faces of Rock n'…

Roots of Cambridge Rock: Ticket Update

Further to the blog post earlier this month regarding the Roots of Cambridge Rock event taking place in October.

We’ve heard from the organisers today that all tickets are now accounted for.

Hopefully you’ve managed to get one should you want it, for what promises to be a great evening.

Roots of Cambridge Rock

On Saturday October 30, St. Pauls Church on Hills Road in Cambridge will be hosting ‘Roots of Cambridge Rock’, an event celebrating the music scene of the 1960s in the city.

Los Kiosk Bears will open the night with an hour long set, there after further jamming bands will perform, followed by an open stage invite to anyone that was in one of the numerous bands from that era to relive the influencial musical heritage of Cambridge.

The three charities which will benefit from…

Walking Syd Barrett's Cambridge

We’ve often plugged the I-Spy Syd in Cambridge tours on this blog and our other promotional places, but for me Saturday was the first chance I’ve had to attend one. It just so happened that we’d picked a day which was also International student graduation day at Cambridge University. There were also a number of hen parties out in force, giving the amusing clash of styles between graduation gowns and bunny ears. I’m not sure which thought amused me most, tapping one of the proud parents on the…
